The Lion
The Lion

The lion is an animal that has been an inspiration to various cultures ever since the beginning of history. The noble creature is both revered and feared, often recalled with its dreadful roar. Its name has been used as a title given to the bravest of people, who are known for their skills in leadership and superintendence. The lion is titled as the king of the jungle, the protectorate among animals, and therefore, also entitled as the symbolic embodinment of the perfect judge. Commanding loyalty and being loyal both are both represented by the lion.

In mythology, the lion represents numerous conceptualizations of power. On Isthar Gates, the image of the lion is engraved as a symbol of the ever-dominant goddess. In Sumer mythology, Inanna was depicted as a lion. Egyptian Sekhmet, known as the Eye of Ra, the god of sun, was also depicted as a lion, often associated with sun, brightness, gold, perseverance, passion, courage and nobility. Vishnu is also associated with the concept of lion. Buddha sits upon a lion as a throne. It's depicted in the Greek mythology with Cybele and Phoebus; as well as griffins and the chimera. They have been depicted as protectors and guardians.

People associated with the lion are often seen as natural leaders, who have control over both the mind and the body. Since lion is a nocturnal animal, it has also been associated with mystical representations involving both the sun the and the moon in various cultures and mythology.

The epic of Gilgamesh writes such:

“You have loved the lion tremendous in strength, though seven traps you have laid for him.”

In Christianity, Jesus is also seen as the lion. In Revelation 5:5 he is mentioned as the Lion of Judah, representing divine authority.

Carl Jung, in his writings about Symbols of Transformation, points out that medieval symbology uses a pair of lions, or a couple humans riding lions, representing the passion between duality of personas that leads to the individualization of a person.

Today the lion represents for us courage and taking challenges head on. People who are associated with the image of the lion are seen as natural leaders, fighters and protectors. The majestic sense of aesthetics it imbues to the image gives lion a unique symbolization among the other animals and mythological creatures.
